Elizabeth Hess and her Sixteenth Birthday, 1887

This photo was given to Carrie Pratt by her Grandmother, Gertrude Hess. She had written on the back that the photo was taken in 1887 when Libby had her 16th birthday. Her father, Joseph Kaul, gave her a beautiful ring for her birthday, which Libby is wearing in the photo.

Joseph's wife and Libby's mother, Katherine Ellsaesser Kaul, had died in 1884 from consumption (tuberculosis).

Thanks to Carrie for providing this info. Libby was Carrie's great-grandmother.
